If you’ve been feeling under the rock lately and need someone to pick you up, you’ve come to the right place! Except here, that ‘someone’ is books.
We’re all in search of some force that’ll drive us to self-improvement and success. Most of us, book lovers, find this in non-fiction books. A lot can be learned through experiences and non-fiction books provide just that!
A research carried out by habit and wealth creation expert Tom Corley shows that, 85% of successful people read two or more self-improvement or educational books per month. Now is the time for you to get started, too.
I’m going to list down 5 books that I have read and have made a huge impact on my life. They will truly, change your life!
1. ‘Why didn’t they Teach Me This in School: 99 Personal Money Management Principles to Live By’ - Cary Siegel
Favorite quote: “Persistence-Half the battle is showing up every day and putting your best effort behind what you’re doing.”
There are a lot of things schools teach us but, personal finance isn’t one of them. When we’re starting out in our careers, we’re all clueless as to how to save, where to invest, how much tax needs to be paid, and the list goes on.
This book is what you would need as a graduating gift. It simply states 99 money management principles, to follow, to lead a debt-free life. One of the principles states that we need to invest one hour each week into reading about personal finance. I think this is so important. We are so often caught up in paying rent & other bills, spending on luxury items, etc that we forget the importance of budgeting. This book will remind you of just that.
I recommend picking this book up to bring a change in your money habits. Goodreads link & rating: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17590703-why-didn-t-they-teach-me-this-in-school 3.84/5
2. Unlearn: 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life - Humble The Poet
Favorite quote: “Stand up for yourself like you would stand up for someone you love.”
Humble The Poet is a rapper, spoken word artist, and Instagram influencer.
His book, an international bestseller, is about everything society has ingrained into us. He teaches us how to unlearn them. Unlearning is the way to break societal barriers and work our way through life. He, very boldly and honestly, puts this out there.
This book is that one friend who bluntly tells us things without sugarcoating. And honestly, we all need this friend in our lives. I find myself reading random chapters from his book whenever I feel the blues. Trust me, it helps a lot. Goodreads link & rating: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40775118-unlearn 4.03/5
3. Smartcuts: How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success - Shane Snow
Favorite quote: "Working smart is harder than working hard. It's just less visible, and we care too much about what others see."
Shane Snow is a New-York based Journalist and a Web entrepreneur. In his book, he tells us stories of entrepreneurs and artists who have made it to the top faster than ever imagined. Now, do not mistake yourselves. He isn’t giving you ‘SHORTcuts’ to success but, ‘SMARTcuts’.
While there’s a lot of interesting advice he offers, the ones that inspired me the most were on mentoring and decision making.
He emphasizes the importance of a mentor in our lives. He also gives examples from the lives of successful leaders such as Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg on how to make decisions by deducting the things in our lives that matter less.
I think that’s wonderful advice because it’s something we all struggle with. We focus on things that don’t matter the most and go haywire.
For all of you entrepreneurs, this is one book you should definitely read. It will change the way you do business. Goodreads link & rating:
4. Attitude Is Everything: Change Your Attitude... and You Change Your Life! - Jeff Keller
Favorite quote: “When you believe you can do something, you have the courage to move forward despite being afraid.”
This book, literally, has it in its title, “Change your life” and it is true to its words. This is a very short read. About 100 pages. But as small as it is, it teaches us the biggest lessons in life.
From getting out of your comfort zones to conquering your fears and welcoming only positive people in your life, this book, unlike others, will actually make you want to do these things.
He makes a very good point about committing to ourselves and transforming our problems into opportunities. He illustrates all this by citing an example of how he changed his career from a lawyer to a motivational speaker.
So, he’s not just all about talks but also action! Goodreads link & rating: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/482579.Attitude_Is_Everything 4.18/5
5. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good & Break Bad Ones - James Clear
Favorite quote: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
I highly recommend reading this, The New York Times Bestseller. There is nothing but, praise for this one. Not once will this book bore you. It’s written in such simple language. It will make you take up a habit you’ve failed to create over and over again.
It gives you a detailed way to get into a habit and presents you with all facts and data. Something that I was very amused by, was the Law of 1%. This law basically, gives us the idea that improving even 1% every day will lead to us becoming 37 times better over the year. But, if we get 1% worse every day, you’re back at level 0.
He, so effortlessly, explains how our lives revolve around our habits. This book has so many wow moments and is so well written. I cannot put it in the right words, how much this book has made a difference in my life. Everyone needs to read this book to become a better person.
